Environmental Engineering, University of Stuttgart Thesis: "Biofilm visualisation in microfluidic cells" Field of Expertise Biomineralization Microfluidics Microbiome Investigation Main Research Fields Biomineralization on colloidal activated carbon Permeable sorption barriers using colloidal activated carbon (CAC) offer a technical solution for the remediation of challenging PFAS contaminations in groundwater. However, a challenge in the real-world application is the recovery and treatment of the loaded activated carbon. A possible solution is the in-situ use of Biomineralization to seal the pores of the activated carbon with calcite to trap the PFAS contaminants permanently. Calcite precipitation is induced by the enzyme urease, which is also produced by the bacterium S. pasteurii. This solution is currently being investigated on a laboratory scale.
