Strategic Career Opportunities
At the UFZ, excellent, collaborative, and diverse research teams are at the heart of our mission. We aim for excellence in science, in world-class research infrastructures, and in knowledge transfer that makes a difference. Guided by our strategic priorities, we invite excellent researchers to join the UFZ.In addition to our job advertisements, there are some instruments to join the UFZ at postdoctoral level or beyond. These are briefly described below.
UFZ Funded Programs 
UFZ Tenure Track Positions
Tenure track positions are derived from the UFZ scientific strategy and its thematic priorities. These positions are advertised publicly.
Depending on the position, academics are initially employed on a fixed term contract for up to six years with an interim and a final evaluation. Following a positive final evaluation, the employee will be offered a permanent position.

Helmholtz Funded Programs
Helmholtz Investigator Groups
The Helmholtz Investigator Groups program enables outstanding early career researchers to establish an independent research group at the UFZ and pursue a strategically aligned, high-impact research agenda within one of Europe’s leading research organizations.
Eligible applicants are researchers two up to six years post-PhD who have gained at least six months of research experience outside Germany, acquired either during their PhD or postdoctoral phase. Funding by the Helmholtz Association will be granted for up to five years.

Helmholtz Rising Talent Professorships
The Helmholtz Rising Talent Professorships program supports outstanding female scientists in their first appointment to a professorship, helping them establish themselves early as scientific leaders through a joint appointment with a university and targeted institutional support.

Helmholtz Distinguished Professorships
The Helmholtz Distinguished Professorship program aims to attract outstanding female scientists from abroad to senior leadership positions by offering full professorships as joint appointments between the Helmholtz Association and its university partners, strengthening excellence and collaboration at the highest academic level.

Third-party Funded Programs 
Emmy-Noether Program
As part of the Global Minds Initiative, the German Research Foundation (DFG) set up the Emmy Noether program to enable outstanding early career researchers to establish independent junior research groups at the UFZ and pursue ambitious, internationally competitive research.
Eligible applicants are researchers up to four years post-PhD who have gained their first postdoctoral experience outside Germany. Funding by the DFG will be granted for up to six years.

German Federal Programs
The German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) regularly issues thematic calls for junior research groups.
Funding is typically granted for up to five years. Applicants are expected to hold an excellent doctoral degree and demonstrate relevant postdoctoral experience. Specific subject-related requirements depend on the respective call.

ERC Starting Grants
The European Reserach Council (ERC) Starting Grants enable outstanding early career researchers to establish an independent research group at the UFZ.
Eligible applicants are researchers who completed their doctoral studies two up to seven years ago and have demonstrated significant scientific independence and excellence. An ERC Starting Grant will be funded for up to five years.

Heisenberg Program
The Heisenberg program by the German Research Foundation (DFG) supports outstanding researchers on their path to a permanent professorship by providing flexible funding formats that enable them to further develop their scientific profile and academic independence at an advanced career stage.
