As England’s players head into a World Cup semi final tonight, 60 years on from their 1966 triumph, we are looking back in The Guardian Archive at how that tournament was celebrated. We found these original 1966 World Cup souvenir envelopes. With no highlights reels or match replays, fan nostalgia took a very different form. This beautiful design shows a custom illustration of a historic England v Scotland match from 1879! Each envelope was stamped with a unique match day frank from the host city and came with a copy of the Guardian carrying that day's match report. During that iconic summer, our readers could send us a self-addressed envelope and request these collector’s items for 3 shillings (around £2.50 in today’s money).
