About Mike joined Calico in 2024 as Chief Scientific Officer, a role in which he is responsible for the company’s overall research strategy. He is establishing a lab that will address the aging process and associated diseases, expanding upon his work in human genetics. Mike is widely recognized for his work on fundamental immunological mechanisms, including discovering the genetic basis, pathogenesis, and treatment of several congenital disorders of the immune system including Autoimmune Lymphoproliferative Syndrome, Caspase-8 deficiency syndrome, PASLI disease, XMEN disease, and CHAPLE disease. Prior to joining Calico, Mike was Chief, Molecular Development of the Immune System Section, and Co-Director, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Clinical Genomics Program at the National Institutes of Health. Mike is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and was designated an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (O.B.E), conferred by Queen Elizabeth II. Mike earned his bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences from Johns Hopkins University and his medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis. He completed his internship in internal medicine and research in biochemistry at the University of Iowa. He performed his postdoctoral training with Nobel laureates David Baltimore and Phillip Sharp at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
