How to get started
Contact Avalara to purchase an account, if you don’t already have one.
Download and install the Avalara for WooCommerce extension.
Log in to your Avalara account to get your Account Number and License Key.
Input your Account Number and License Key within your WooCommerce settings.
Set up and save your tax codes and settings for your store.

First and foremost, do not get this service unless you have an in house PHP developer. In my experience, it didn't work out of the box, nearly. It failed to write necessary information to the database in order to confirm origin address, it improperly writes serialized data to the meta fields. I had to write an add_filter to post updating because it saved incorrectly on post saves. I had to write a custom exposure zone selection list because no one could fill out an "add certificate" action. It failed to populate the list of exposure zones on its own. 1. This plugin is gonna throw errors all over the place. For starters if your DB (and it should) uses sql_require_primary_key=ON. This plugin will fail. You should have primary keys on things people and if you don't you have no business making plugins. 2. AvaTax hardcodes the table name as wp_wc_avatax_tax_codes instead of relying on $wpdb->prefix. Bonkers, not everyone uses "wp_" here 3. AvaTax is touching the cart too early because it is registering checkout integrations during init. Which means things like $cart->is_empty() is being called before wp_loaded. This is just what I found in the first 3 minutes. I'm tired of wordpress, I'm tired of crappy wordpress plugins. Here are the best practices recommended for any customer concerned about future plugin updates: Remove “auto-update” for the Avalara plugin and update the Avalara plugin in the Woo sandbox before production. If everything goes well, roll out to their Woo production site. If something breaks, contact Avalara including all the plugins being used along with the Avalara plugin for Avalara to troubleshoot. Terrible avoid if at all possible. Doesn't support modern Woocommerce block cart or checkout. Frequently causes errors when updating. I get scared every time I update this plugin. Hot garbage... avoid, avoid avoid.
