As soon as a city wins a bid to host a FIFA World Cup or Olympic & Paralympic Games, the starting gun is fired on getting ready to welcome the world. The first hurdle faced is funding early planning. We spoke to leaders of the world’s biggest events over the past twenty years to crystallize the main priorities and challenges that host cities face the moment that the fireworks fade and ticker tape is being swept away. They all agreed that the early planning secures the best possible long-term benefit for a city and its residents, the strongest legacy. Although in most cases, host cities are caught in a trap of needing to produce a robust plan to secure this starter funding and having insufficient funding to produce a strong enough plan that ensures success. To help host cities with this challenge, we have identified four new routes to starter funding for cities hosting major events. Our ‘Planning for legacy first’ report also sets out a supporting case to enable cities to start a conversation with these potential investors. Our report will contribute to the strategic thinking of the World Economic Forum Sports Economy community, launching in New York today, ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026™ - Canada, Mexico and the United States final. How structural ingenuity allows you to realise architecturally driven design. The BanBajío Headquarters is a campus scale development combining a high-rise tower and a long-span amenities building above five stories of below-grade parking, all designed such that the structural system is architecturally expressed. The tower’s exposed diagrid and shear walls provide the structure and are integrated into the architecture. Inside the tower, 15 metre clear spans between facades creates column free interiors for fully flexible fit out. The amenities building has its own structural form, achieving the column-free architectural ambition to create open spaces for people to meet, gather, and share ideas. The structure primarily uses exposed and stacked full-story concrete walls, with concrete framed floors and long span steel framing where it provides efficiency above a large commissary and auditorium. This project highlights how Arup’s expertise in structural engineering and interdisciplinary coordination can achieve striking, architecturally driven designs. We're delighted to be supporting Akfen Renewable Energy in delivering integrated solar PV and battery energy storage systems (BESS), helping to create a more resilient energy network and accelerate the shift to cleaner power. Good design no longer guarantees data centre project delivery. Even when projects reach advanced stages of development, delivery can still stall. Not because of engineering quality - but because of the conditions surrounding delivery. Across many European markets, projects are increasingly being shaped by: – permitting complexity – infrastructure constraints – local opposition – resource availability As a result, delivery risk is no longer only technical. In many cases, the biggest risks are emerging outside the project boundary. Project success increasingly depends on how well developments align with wider infrastructure systems, local conditions and stakeholder realities. Cities don’t just heat up during the day. They hold onto heat long after the sun sets. As our expert Dimple Rana explains, this is known as the urban heat island effect. While air conditioning can contribute to urban heating by releasing waste heat into the surrounding environment, the primary driver lies in how our cities are built. Roads, buildings and other hard surfaces absorb solar energy throughout the day and slowly release it at night, trapping heat and preventing urban areas from cooling down. Even without air conditioning, cities like London can be 4–5°C warmer than surrounding areas. The takeaway is clear: cooling cities starts with passive design, before turning to air conditioning. By designing cities with cooler materials, more shade, trees and green space, and by creating space for heat to dissipate, we can reduce temperatures naturally and make our cities more resilient to a warming climate.. AI may be accelerating demand for larger data centres, but their future won’t be defined by size alone.
