Putting Autonomous Vehicles to Work. 64 7 Comments Like Comment Share Oxa reposted this Zenzic 8,084 followers 1w Edited Report this post Port of Tyne autonomous project demonstrates the future of logistics 🚢 The P CAL (Port Connected and Automated Logistics) project at Port of Tyne was designed to push the boundaries of autonomous logistics by deploying and validating a fully autonomous terminal tractor within a live port environment. Delivered through the UK Government CAM Pathfinder programme, the project was led by the North East Automotive Alliance (NEAA), alongside the Port of Tyne, Oxa, and a consortium of leading industry and academic partners. The aim was to build on the North East’s earlier 5G CAL and V CAL initiatives, while moving autonomous technology from proof of concept trials into a complex, safety critical, real world operational setting. Over the course of the project, the consortium designed, deployed and integrated: 🚚 A fully autonomous terminal tractor ⛴️ Autonomous container transport solution capable of operating on a busy quayside 📡 Secure, resilient mesh communication network capable of integrating with terminal operating systems 🏗️ Real time coordination with live crane movements 🔐 Robust cybersecurity framework to enable safe, remote and automated operations. Two Lidars are mounted at the YT193’s frontal corners, while five radars are interspersed about its perimeter (resulting in three radars sitting on one side and two on the other, achieving 360° coverage). Additionally, 360° visual awareness is also enabled by a plethora of cameras, mounted in tall, cylindrical ‘spires’ at the frontal corners, with some space between the spires and the tractor helping some of the cameras to keep track of objects and activity behind the vehicle.
