We had a great experience at the 2026 EV Infrastructure summit in Sydney last week, where CEO Jonathan Parker discussed the future trends and innovations to support fleet charging with Dr. Brendan Koehler (Chief Power Officer BK Charging) and Riccardo Pagliarella, PhD (Ambassador, Asia and Oceana, Open Charge Alliance). Heavy charging has unique challenges, but it offers major electrification potential. A recurring theme at the event was that price volatility is making businesses look at fleet electrification as an economical operational decision. However, it’s not as simple as purchasing some new vehicles and installing some chargers. Charge time requirements, site load management and grid reliability are key considerations that need to be raised at the beginning of the process. Most organisations start with: “We need a charger.” But by the time that sentence is said, the vehicles have usually been chosen, timelines are locked in, and infrastructure has become a downstream problem. The better questions, asked earlier is: What does our future EV strategy look like? Make it powerful and future proofed! Having the experts design a plan can help map the strategy. The plan often stalls when trying to bridge hardware selection, site analysis, and installation. Then come the operational questions nobody planned for: utilisation across multiple sites and home charging for employees, energy cost reporting, FBT, reimbursements and who fixes a charger when it’s down. And eventually scale, where a setup built for 20 vehicles doesn’t hold at 200. A powered fleet is what you get when vehicle, charging, energy, and service are designed together from the start. At IPWEA, the most common fleet electrification concerns weren’t about vehicles, they were about how charging actually works in practice. Questions around charging across sites, homes, and day-to-day operations led a number of people to the Fleet Electrification Guide we compiled for the event. Time for a new path?
There’s a simple but uncomfortable truth in New Zealand’s energy debate right now: we’re doubling down on the most expensive, volatile fuels we have while overlooking the infrastructure that would actually make us resilient and give us independence. Imported petrol and gas expose us to global price swings we can’t control. On average up to 80% of the energy in petrol is wasted as heat, only around 20% of the energy is delivered as motion. Yet we continue to frame fossil fuels as a stability mechanism, when in reality, they’re one of the biggest sources of instability. Meanwhile, the rest of the world is moving in the opposite direction. The International Energy Agency expects renewable capacity between 2025 and 2030 to double what was built in the previous five years. Governments are investing heavily in large-scale batteries, smart grids and flexibility markets because they want energy sovereignty, not dependence. Australia shows what the future could look like: 183,000 household batteries bought in the second half of 2025 74 committed storage projects $1.7B in BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) investments reaching financial close at the end of 2025 New Zealand already has what many countries want: an 84% renewable grid. What we lack are the storage systems, flexibility tools, and smart management infrastructure that make renewables reliable and affordable. We’ve spent a lot of time in offshore markets. Around the world, countries are actively designing their energy independence strategies. They know the market is shifting fast and that resilience isn’t something you can retrofit later. If we make the right moves now - storage, flexible demand, smarter hydro use, fleet electrification and clean heat - New Zealand can build genuine energy independence powered by renewable sources. If we don’t, we’ll spend decades paying global prices for fuels we don’t produce, and remain exposed to shocks we can’t influence. #EnergySecurity #EnergySovereignty #Renewables #SmartCharging #BatteryStorage #Electrification
