IHI Power Systems Co.,Ltd. (IPS)and IHI Corporation have commenced demonstration operations of a 6,000 kW-class ammonia-fueled reciprocating engine for land-based power generation at IPS’s Ota Works in Gunma Prefecture, Japan. Building on the ammonia-fueled engine technologies developed for the maritime sector, the demonstration plant will verify the safety, operability, and performance of the entire power generation system, including fuel supply facilities, exhaust gas after-treatment systems, and ammonia leak mitigation measures. The dual-fuel engine is designed to achieve an ammonia fuel ratio and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction rate exceeding 90%, supporting the transition toward lower-carbon power generation. Designed for a wide range of applications—including industrial facilities, remote islands, data centers, mining operations, and industrial parks—the system is expected to provide a practical pathway for decarbonizing existing diesel-based power generation while contributing to the growth of the ammonia value chain. Development and On-Board Demonstration of Marine Ammonia Engine The world's first commercial ammonia-fueled ship enters service IHI Power Systems Co.,Ltd. Co., Ltd. has developed an ammonia-fueled reciprocating engine that reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by over 90%. As a result, IHI Power Systems achieved the International Maritime Organization's GHG reduction target by 2040. Furthermore, the tugboat with the ammonia engine installed demonstrated the ability to operate safely and stably using ammonia as a fuel. Large-scale low-carbon ammonia supply chain plan certified under Japan's support scheme IHI, together with KOBE STEEL LTD, Sumitomo Chemical, Nippon Beet Sugar Manufacturing Co Ltd, 北海道電力株式会社, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical, and UBE Corporation, is advancing a large-scale low-carbon ammonia value chain connecting production in India with utilization in Japan. The initiative has now been certified under Japan's "Support focusing on the price gap" scheme, marking an important milestone toward expanding the use of low-carbon ammonia from FY2030 onward. Under the plan, low-carbon ammonia produced through a project jointly developed by IHI and ACME Group in India will be supplied for power generation, chemical production, and industrial applications in Japan. As the offtaker and supplier, IHI will work with its partners to establish the infrastructure needed to support the practical use of low-carbon ammonia and contribute to the realization of a carbon-neutral society. IHI Corporation completes technical verifications for ammonia single firing burner for thermal power plant boilers IHI has successfully completed technical verifications for the practical application of an ammonia single firing burner for thermal power plant boilers. Designed to enable the transition toward 100% ammonia firing, the burner allows higher ammonia co-firing ratios while minimizing modifications to existing boiler systems. Through repeated large-scale combustion testing, IHI achieved: ■Stable combustion across a wide operational range ■Reduction of NOx emissions and unburnt ammonia ■Compliance with environmental standards at an operational level Building on previous demonstrations—including ammonia co-firing at a commercial thermal power plant—IHI will further advance this technology toward full-scale deployment. The meeting was also attended by Ambassador Hikariko Ono and PIETRO CIUCCI, CEO of Stretto di Messina S.p.A., the concessionaire of the Strait of Messina Bridge Project. The parties reaffirmed the significance of this landmark project—the construction of the world’s longest suspension bridge—and the importance of close cooperation between Japan and Italy to ensure its steady progress. Enhancing power plant reliability through advanced digital solutions IHI Corporation is pleased to announce that Kobelco Power Kobe No. 2, Inc. has begun full-scale operation of an advanced anomaly diagnosis system integrated into our MEDICUS NAVI operation and maintenance support platform at Units 3 and 4 of the Kobe Power Plant. Originally introduced in FY2020 as a remote monitoring system for real-time operational data, MEDICUS NAVI has now evolved into a more sophisticated solution. The latest upgrade—implemented after verification testing—includes: □High-accuracy anomaly detection powered by IHI’s proprietary I-ASTA model □A machine learning–based steam leakage detection function □An operation optimization algorithm that visualizes factors impacting boiler efficiency By combining these capabilities, the system not only detects anomalies across diverse equipment with greater precision, but also enables operators to better understand plant behavior and identify opportunities for performance improvement. This contributes to safer, more stable plant operations while supporting continuous operational advancement. Strengthening Global Collaboration for Carbon Neutrality in Aviation In April 2025, IHI Corporation joined the International Aerospace Environmental Group ® (IAEG), a global non-profit organization that brings together aerospace companies to advance sustainability initiatives across the aviation industry. IAEG promotes collaboration on innovative environmental solutions and supports the development of voluntary consensus standards to address key sustainability challenges. As part of this initiative, IHI participated in its first in-person IAEG meeting held in Montreal, Canada, from March 31 to April 4, 2025. During the meeting, we engaged in active discussions on the latest trends in carbon neutrality and industry-wide environmental efforts, while also strengthening networks with leading aircraft and aero-engine manufacturers. We further gained valuable insights, including updates on methodologies for calculating Scope 3 Category 11 emissions (emissions during product use). In October 2025, IHI also attended the IAEG Autumn General Assembly in Rome, Italy, where we continued to deepen our engagement. Through working groups on ESG initiatives and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), we discussed ways to enhance transparency of environmental information, strengthen supply chain collaboration, and drive continuous improvement across the industry. Contributing to one of the world’s most ambitious infrastructure projects On April 30, an IHI Corporation delegation led by JUN KOBAYASHI, Representative Director, Senior Executive Officer of IHI Corporation, visited Italy and held discussions with Mr. PIETRO CIUCCI, CEO of Stretto di Messina S.p.A., the concessionaire of the Strait of Messina Bridge Project. During the meeting, both sides exchanged views on the strategic importance and global significance of the project, which aims to construct the world’s longest suspension bridge. The dialogue provided a valuable opportunity to reaffirm a shared understanding and strengthen mutual recognition. We were honored by CEO Ciucci’s welcome of IHI’s participation in the project as a member of Eurolink, and by his recognition of IHI’s internationally proven track record across a wide range of sectors, including infrastructure and defense.
