The VAT rate for Food & Catering and Hairdressing businesses in Ireland dropped from 13.5% to 9% on 1 July 2026. Don't expect to see prices fall as a result. These are labour intensive sectors that have absorbed successive minimum wage increases, higher Employer PRSI, and since January employer contributions under My Future Fund. The VAT cut (costing the exchequer an estimated €232m this year, rising to €681m annually) is welcome relief on margins that have been under real pressure, not a pricing lever. For most operators, this is about viability and cash flow, not passing on a discount. If your local café/restaurant or hairdresser doesn't drop their prices, go easy on them, they've had a lot thrown at them over the past few years.
