The Modernising Menopause Counselling (MMC) initiative has received important international recognition through its feature in The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology & Women's Health, bringing its evidence-based approach to a global audience.

Supporting the next generation of scientists through education
Investing in the future of science starts in the classroom. In 2026, the Richter Gedeon Plc. Centenary Foundation awarded HUF 107.7 million in funding to 38 educational institutions across Hungary to support the development of science education infrastructure. This year’s programme reaches every county in the country, as well as Budapest.
The grants will help schools upgrade laboratories and science classrooms, procure modern laboratory equipment, demonstration tools, scientific instruments and safety equipment, creating better learning environments for students and teachers alike.
Since its launch in 2023, the programme has supported 114 educational institutions with a total of nearly HUF 315 million, reflecting Richter’s long-term commitment to strengthening science education and inspiring future generations of researchers, engineers, healthcare professionals and innovators.
Congratulations to all the selected institutions. We look forward to seeing the positive impact these developments will have on science education across Hungary.

From Awareness to Action: Rethinking Menopause Support
Menopause is a natural stage of life that every woman will experience. Yet for many, it remains surrounded by uncertainty, silence, and a sense of facing it alone. The findings of Gedeon Richter's international study titled Taboo Topics in Women’s Health, conducted among 12,000 women across six European countries, reveal a striking picture. In Hungary, only 27% of women experiencing menopausal symptoms seek medical advice, the lowest rate among the countries surveyed.
The extent to which the area of menopause is stigmatized is perfectly illustrated by the section on menopause in our research presented today, which includes cross-country comparisons, said Zsuzsa Beke, Head of Global Public Relations, CSR and Public Affairs at Gedeon Richter. Whether we’re talking about sexuality, impact on quality of life, barriers to accessing information, or misconceptions – for example, regarding hormones – it’s clear that we have room for improvement at the European level, and the data from our Taboo research also reveals the huge differences between countries, she said.
“I am proud that our original medicine for treating menopause-related health conditions will be available in several countries. It has been 25 years since an original therapy was introduced in the therapeutic area. Our ambition is to become a global thought-leader in gynecological therapies, and this latest launch is an important step toward that goal,” Zsuzsa Beke added.
“Hormone replacement therapy is clearly the gold standard for treating menopausal symptoms, as it addresses their underlying cause: hormone deficiency. It has a positive effect on all key symptoms, including hot flushes, osteoporosis, and the preservation of the skin’s collagen content, and it even reduces the risk of Alzheimer’s disease,” said Professor Attila Jakab, obstetrician, gynecologist and endocrinologist at the University of Debrecen.
As the medical community has reassessed the scientific evidence regarding the therapy’s risks - and regulatory authorities have begun to follow these conclusions, for example in the United States and increasingly in Europe - hormone replacement therapy is experiencing a global renaissance, Professor Jakab added. Dóra Szerencsés, Healthcare Strategic Director at Inspira Research, highlighted the biggest differences across the countries surveyed in the research. Information-seeking related to menopause is such a topic: Hungary is strongly digitally focused: 77% of Hungarian women rely on online sources, while only 45% turn to healthcare professionals for information, which is the lowest among the countries. Orsolya Iványi, menopause expert and activist, was also present and spoke about the high level of interest in the topic, which she experiences firsthand in her daily work. She also emphasized that the overall approach to menopause needs to change, advocating for a more holistic view of this group of health conditions.

The event brought together leading executives to discuss the impact of artificial intelligence and broader economic trends shaping Hungary’s future, including the potential to unlock up to €15 billion in productivity gains by 2030. It also provided a valuable platform to highlight the importance of innovation and thought leadership in areas such as women’s healthcare.
Reflecting on the discussions, Gábor Orbán noted: “More time is needed to see how much of the hype around AI is justified and whether the productivity gains can be unlocked. Advancing Patient Access and Healthcare Sustainability Across Europe
We are pleased to share that Dr. Alexandrosz Czira, Pricing & Market Access Manager in our Biotechnology Business Unit, has been appointed as Vice Chair of the Biosimilar Market Access Committee at Medicines for Europe.
This appointment reflects Alexandrosz’s professional expertise and experience in market access, as well as his active engagement within the broader biosimilars community.
In this capacity, Alexandrosz will collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders across the sector, contributing to ongoing discussions on improving access to biosimilars, supporting sustainable healthcare systems, and encouraging a balanced and competitive market environment in Europe.
At a time when EU-approved biosimilars have already delivered more than 9.2 billion patient treatment days since 2011, effective market access policies remain essential to ensuring patients can benefit from these therapies while supporting the long-term sustainability of healthcare systems. The impact of biosimilar competition is already evident across Europe: between 2013 and 2023, the number of treatment days with anti-TNF medicines doubled, helping more patients gain access to important biological therapies.
“Biosimilars play an important role in expanding access to high-quality biological medicines while helping healthcare systems remain sustainable for the future. I look forward to working with colleagues from across the sector to contribute to a competitive, sustainable and patient-centered biosimilars landscape for the benefit of patients and healthcare systems alike.”

From Budapest to the Global Stage: Honouring Excellence in Medicinal Chemistry
Scientific innovation connects researchers, institutions and patients across the world.
Earlier this month, the 2025 IUPAC-Richter Prize in Medicinal Chemistry was formally presented to Professor Richard B. Silverman of Northwestern University during a ceremony in Atlanta. The award was handed over on behalf of Richter by Dr. János Éles, Head of Chemistry.
Professor Silverman received the prize in recognition of his outstanding contributions to medicinal chemistry, including the discovery of pregabalin, a breakthrough therapy that has improved the lives of millions of patients worldwide.
For more than two decades, the IUPAC–Richter Prize has celebrated scientists whose discoveries have advanced medicinal chemistry and contributed to the development of innovative medicines. Through its longstanding partnership with IUPAC, Richter is proud to support the recognition of scientific excellence and to help strengthen the international collaboration that drives pharmaceutical innovation forward.
The award ceremony brought together members of the global medicinal chemistry community, highlighting the shared commitment to scientific progress that transcends borders and benefits patients around the world.

Richter introduces its innovative new menopause treatment in Budapest
“Research into and investment in menopause treatments has been at a low level over the past decades, which is why we can be particularly proud that Richter has now been able to introduce an original product in this field. Menopause and the postmenopausal state can be extremely difficult for women, and it is important to change our approach to these conditions. There is a need not only for the treatment option that Richter is now providing, but also for a further shift in the mindset of all the stakeholders, such as HCPs and the entire industry,” said Tamas Szolyak, Gedeon Richter’s commercial director who delivered the opening speech of the scientific meeting’ second day introducing the company’s new estetrol (E4) based original product for menopause conditions.
Balázs Szatmári MD the company’s Chief Medical Officer explained that currently, roughly 6% of total private healthcare investments are directed to women's health. Nevertheless, this area is becoming increasingly important, he added, given that women today spend an average of 25% more of their lives in poor health compared to men. He also noted that while significant progress has been made in some countries over the past decade, there is still room for improvement. Increasing awareness is a positive development, but it must be accompanied by evidence-based medical treatment—and this is precisely what Richter is now bringing to patients by the original medicine built on the estetrol (E4) platform.
The scientific program featured leading experts of the field who have discussed the full spectrum of the burden menopause puts on women, the history of E4 discovery and research, and its efficacy and safety profile. The meeting also highlighted the importance of effective communication within an increasingly crowded communication landscape.
“Our goal is to help women understand that while menopause is a natural stage of life, those experiencing symptoms have a wide range of options to address them. As healthcare professionals, it is our responsibility to build the trust that enables women to shift their perspective. Conversation has a key role in it: honest transparent dialogue, managing expectations and providing follow-up leads to the kind of shared decision-making that helps translate scientific evidence into individualized care,” said Rossella Nappi, who is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Pavia (Italy) and key member of several major gynaecological societies.
