Today, Google is announcing new investments in digital infrastructure and skilling initiatives designed to increase connectivity, accelerate economic growth, and deepen resilience in India and around the world. Expanding AI connectivity across four continents Infrastructure is foundational to prevent the digital divide from becoming an AI divide. Today we’re announcing America-India Connect, a collaborative infrastructure initiative anchored by our five-year $15 billion AI infrastructure investment in India to increase the reach, reliability, and resilience of digital connectivity across four continents. In collaboration with local partners, America-India Connect will establish a new international subsea gateway in Visakhapatnam (Vizag); three new subsea paths connecting India to Singapore, South Africa, and Australia; and four strategic fiber-optic routes that bolster network resilience and capacity between the United States, India, and multiple locations across the Southern Hemisphere. Connecting India’s east coast (Vizag) We are developing a direct fiber-optic path between Vizag and Chennai on India’s east coast to South Africa. When combined with the Equiano and Nuvem subsea cable systems, this will create a redundant high-capacity route that connects the American east coast around Africa to Vizag. Additionally, we are delivering a direct path between Vizag and Singapore. When combined with the Bosun and Tabua subsea cable systems, this will create a South Pacific route that connects the American west coast through Australia to Vizag. These investments will establish Vizag as a major international subsea gateway, adding vital diversity from existing landings in Mumbai and Chennai. For a nation of more than 1 billion people, this will increase the resilience of India’s digital backbone and improve economic security. Connecting India’s west coast We are constructing a direct fiber-optic path between Mumbai and Western Australia. In combination with the TalayLink and Honomoana subsea cable systems, this will create a South Pacific route connecting the American west coast around Australia to Mumbai. This new path complements the Blue, Raman, and Sol subsea cables, which together form a data corridor from the American east coast through the Red Sea to Mumbai. Closing the AI divide Reliable infrastructure is the best counter to a digital divide. It is well documented that greater connectivity via subsea cables improves internet affordability and reliability, driving productivity and long-term economic growth. With greater access to digital services, individuals can develop new skills, and businesses and public sector organizations can better serve their communities — helping prevent the AI divide from taking root. These routes do more than move bits and bytes — they honor a long history of global connection by turning maritime merchant shipping routes between the “New World” and India into digital trade routes between two countries, bringing their economies closer together. America-India Connect builds on our work with dozens of regional partners to advance AI access in Africa, Australia, and the Pacific. Realizing the benefits of AI transformation While resilient infrastructure is the foundation for technology access, realizing the full benefits of AI also requires investing in the people who use it. That’s why we’re working in lockstep with governments to empower people with the digital skills they need to seize new opportunities. Karmayogi Bharat (the Government of India’s digital mission) and Google Cloud are collaborating to accelerate Mission Karmayogi’s vision of building a future-ready civil service by leveraging AI-enabled digital capabilities across the nation. As the primary cloud partner, Google Cloud provides secure and resilient infrastructure for the iGOT (Integrated Government Online Training) Karmayogi platform. This scalable infrastructure supports over 20 million public servants across 800+ districts, providing reliable access to learning services at scale. AI will also enhance the access, discoverability, and effectiveness of learning on the iGOT platform. By digitizing and structuring legacy training repositories into searchable knowledge assets and progressively enabling content in 18+ Indian languages, the partnership will help advance professional development and empower officials to learn in their preferred language.
