Uber is preparing for its robotaxi rollout with a 50,000-square-foot Houston depot, including EV charging and maintenance infrastructure.
This is a great signal for the wider fleet market, because even companies built on asset-light models are recognising that electric fleet operations depend on the basics: depot capacity, charging access, maintenance workflows, energy availability, uptime, and vehicle readiness.
The vehicle technology matters, but the operating environment around the vehicle matters just as much. For any fleet moving toward electrification, the question is not only “which vehicles should we buy?” It is also:

Schedules are useful, but day-to-day fleet operations are full of exceptions: late returns, charger issues, energy constraints, and vehicle swaps.
That’s where dispatch becomes more than knowing the schedule. It’s about making the right next decision, quickly.

The US public EV charging network has passed a major milestone of more than 250,000 public charging ports nationwide.
It is important progress, but for fleets don't just need to know how many chargers exist. Fleets need to know whether the right chargers are in the right places, with the right power levels, reliability, access, and dwell-time fit for real operations.
A charging port that works well for a passenger car stop may not solve the needs of a depot-based fleet, a regional delivery route, a transit operator, or a heavy-duty vehicle schedule.
As charging networks grow, utilisation and planning will matter more than headline numbers. Fleet electrification needs infrastructure that aligns with routes, driver shifts, grid capacity, vehicle duty cycles, and operational risk.
This milestone is definitely worth celebrating, but the next challenge is making sure charging infrastructure is usable, reliable, and planned around how fleets actually move.

British Columbia’s refreshed Go Electric Rebates program for medium- and heavy-duty zero-emission vehicles is set to open on August 10, 2026.
The program will provide point-of-sale rebates for eligible Class 2b–8 ZEVs purchased by B.C. businesses, non-profits, Indigenous organizations, and local governments.
For fleets, incentives are only one part of the transition. The best outcomes come when vehicle procurement, charging infrastructure, site capacity, operations, and funding strategy are planned together from the start.

This is such an important point.
Fleet electrification is not just about buying chargers and vehicles. For fleets that rely on uptime every day, charging needs to be designed around the operating model from the beginning.
That means thinking about how the whole system will work in practice: energy management, charger availability, site operations, data, cybersecurity, maintenance, dispatch, and long-term scalability.
The real opportunity is not to recreate diesel operations with different assets. It is to use better data and connected systems to run more reliable, efficient and resilient fleet operations.

A lot of fleets are making the same mistake with EV charging.
EV fleet charging is critical infrastructure but they are buying the assets first and hoping the operating model catches up later. The next phase will be won by fleets that start with the enterprise operating model — and then build the assets around it.
When buses, police vehicles, waste trucks, utility crews and logistics fleets depend on charging every day you cant just buy hardware site by site. Fleet productivity, efficiency and cyber security just simply go out the window.
So why is it still being bought like a site-level hardware project?

Dispatch is becoming one of the harder operational questions in fleet electrification.
With diesel fleets, the decision is often relatively straightforward: what vehicle is available, where is it, and what job needs to be covered?
With electric fleets, there are more moving parts.
Battery state, charger availability, return times, duty energy requirements, depot constraints, maintenance windows and operational priorities all start affecting what the “right” dispatch decision looks like.
That is why EV fleet software needs to move beyond basic schedule visibility.
The next step is helping operators make better real-time decisions about which vehicle should be assigned, when it should charge, and how to keep operations moving without creating downstream issues.
