For the first time, global pumped storage capacity has passed 200 GW. A further 243 GW is under construction, with 621 GW in the development pipeline. As variable wind and solar take a larger share of the grid, the question is no longer whether we need long-duration storage, but how quickly we can build it. GHD's Helen Barbour-Bourne, IHA Board Member and Hydropower Leader, sees pumped hydro as foundational to that answer: "The global shift to 24/7 firmed green energy is what makes pumped hydro indispensable. As industry, data centres and electrification drive demand for round-the-clock renewable power that is both secure and sovereign, we need storage that can hold supply over hours and days and release it exactly when the grid needs it. Unlike technologies dependent on critical mineral imports, pumped hydro draws on water, civil infrastructure and local expertise - insulating it from supply chain risk and delivering firm renewable power for generations, not just decades." The Outlook also points to the barriers still slowing deployment: financing, permitting, transmission and geotechnical risk.
