Welcome to the English-language Wiktionary, a collaborative project to produce a free-content multilingual dictionary. It aims to describe all words of all languages using definitions and descriptions in English.
Wiktionary has grown beyond a standard dictionary and now includes a thesaurus, a rhyme guide, phrase books, language statistics, and extensive appendices. We aim to include not only the definition of a word, but also enough information to really understand it. Thus etymologies, pronunciations, sample quotations, synonyms, antonyms, and translations are included.
Wiktionary is a wiki, which means that you can edit it, and all the content is dual-licensed under both the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License and the GNU Free Documentation License. Before you contribute, you may wish to read through some of our help pages, and bear in mind that we do things quite differently from other wikis. In particular, we have strict layout conventions and inclusion criteria. (uncountable) The state of being plural.
(ecclesiastical) The holding of multiple benefices.
(countable) A state of being numerous.
(countable) A number or part of a whole which is greater than any other number or part, but not necessarily a majority.
(countable) A number of votes for a single candidate or position which is greater than the number of votes gained by any other single candidate or position voted for, but which is less than a majority of valid votes cast.
(countable) A margin by which a number exceeds another number, especially of votes.
(countable) A group of many entities: a large number.
(countable) A group composed of more than one entity.
(of spouses) Polygamy.
(psychology) Synonym of multiplicity (“the condition whereby a person displays or experiences multiple distinct personalities or selves in one body”).
Today is Plural Pride Day, a day celebrated by some to raise awareness for plural people: those who experience multiple selves, identities, or headmates.
